Namib Desert 2011
The Namib - one of the oldest deserts in the world - is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most hostile places on earth, as decades of dry periods create the most difficult conditions for animals and plants.
We stayed in our rooftop tents near Sossusvlei - in good anticipation of a hot, dry day in the Namib. But it turned out differently. The evening sun was hidden behind thick clouds. I was a bit desperate because I was looking forward to taking photos in the dunes. At night it started to storm ... so strong that our tent neighbors moved to the nearby lodge. We stayed in our roof tents, even if the tent sometimes took off from the extreme gusts ;-)
The next morning we set off in the dark and stood at the entrance to Sossusvlei at sunrise. The clouds cleared - the sun grew stronger and the dunes began to glow. The rain turned the sand a deep red - the prints of the water droplets could be seen in the sand. A rare and spectacular backdrop to take wonderful photos. The vlei only fills with water every 10 years !!
With a lot of luck we were in the right place at the right time :-)
An unforgettable experience ... dream with me!
